Port of Hull

The Port of Hull is a port located at the confluence of the River Hull and the Humber Estuary in Kingston upon Hull, England.

Seaborne trade at the port can be traced to at least the 13th century, originally conducted mainly at the outfall of the River Hull, known as The Haven, or later as the Old Harbour. In the 1773 the Hull Dock Company was formed and Hull' first dock built, on land formerly occupied by Hull town walls; in the next half century a ring of docks wwere built around the old down on the site of the former fortifications, known as the Town Docks - the first, The Dock (1778), (or The Old Dock, known as Queen's Dock after naming in 1855), Humber Dock (1809), and Junction Dock (1829) - an extension, Railway Dock (1846) was opened to serve the newly built Hull and Selby Railway.

The first dock east of the river, Victoria Dock, was opened 1850. Docks in along the banks of the Humber to the west were begun in 1862 with the construction of the West Dock (later Albert Dock), the William Wright extension opened 1880, and a dock further west, St. Andrew's Dock opened in 1883. In 1885 a new eastern dock was built, Alexandra Dock, connected to a new railway line constructed by the same company - the Hull Barnsley & West Riding Junction Railway and Dock Company. In 1914, King George Dock, was built jointly by the competing railway companies the Hull and Barnsley company and the North Eastern Railway; this was extended in 1969 by the Queen Elizabeth Dock extension. As of 2016 Alexandra is being modernised for use in wind farm construction, with a factory, and estuary side quay under construction - the development known as Green Port Hull.

Rotterdam

Rotterdam (/ˈrɒtərdæm/ or /ˌrɒtərˈdæm/;Dutch: [ˌrɔtərˈdɑm]) is a city in South Holland, the Netherlands, located geographically within the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt river delta at the North Sea. Its history goes back to 1270 when a dam was constructed in the Rotte river and people settled around it for safety. In 1340 Rotterdam was granted city rights by the Count of Holland and slowly grew into a major logistic and economic centre. Nowadays it is home to Europe's largest port and has a population of 624,799 (2014, city proper), ranking second in the Netherlands. The Greater Rijnmond area is home to approximately 1.4 million people and the Rotterdam The Hague urban area makes for the 168th most populous urban area in the world. Rotterdam is part of the yet larger Randstad conurbation with a total population of 7,100,000.

The city of Rotterdam is known for the Erasmus University, riverside setting, lively cultural life and its maritime heritage. The near-complete destruction of Rotterdam's city centre during World War II (known as the Rotterdam Blitz) has resulted in a varied architectural landscape including sky-scrapers, which are an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities. Rotterdam is home to some world-famous architecture from renowned architects like Rem Koolhaas, Piet Blom, Ben van Berkel and others. Recently Rotterdam was listed 8th in The Rough Guide Top 10 Cities to Visit and was voted 2015 European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism.
